I've been self teaching myself to sew over the past couple months. With all the sewing blogs and tutorials out there, it's been a lot of fun and very doable for a beginner like me. The very first thing I decided to sew was a Prince Phillip cape for my husband for Halloween. It was a very crude attempt, but worked great for a costume that would be worn twice. I didn't use any kind of pattern and the button at the neck didn't have a button hole, but it still turned out great!
I also sewed him some boot tops. Those turned out even better, but I don't really have a good picture of them. You can kind of see them in the last picture of our whole family. It was a great way to start sewing since there wasn't huge commitment with a Halloween costume. If I had totally failed it wouldn't have been the end of the world. These two pieces sparked my interest to learn even more, and now I'm addicted to sewing!

Great job!
